Commonwealth Ave. Fullerton, 714-871-1200 twistedvinewines.com • Chris Castillo has spent the better part of two decades in the restaurant business, starting as a bus boy. He's always wanted to open his own place, so he and wife Jessica opened the bar in an old building in downtown Fullerton. • The Castillos opened the bar focused on wine in 2006. "There were some doubters, and we even doubted ourselves," Chris Castillo said. "Fullerton at the time was kind of a bourbon-and-beer town. Fortunately, they were wrong." • The bar has special meaning for them; they met in a bar, Heroes, that's right across the street from the Twisted Vine. Why they are No.1: In a word, service, Chris Castillo said. He wants patrons at his bar to be comfortable from the moment they walk through the door. He credits his employees for creating that comfortable atmosphere. "They're the ones who make the place successful," Castillo said. "Their passion and their joy really make the difference." Claim to fame: The Castillos pride themselves on having one of the first bars in Orange County specializing in wines. "We're really the only wine-driven business in the area," Castillo said. Most of the bar's focus is on California wines, but there are plenty of other options, too. "We try to expose people to different varietals," Castillo said, which is why the bar stocks wines from such obscure locales as Uruguay. Fan Favorite: "The Twisted Vine has a knowledgeable, inviting staff and a great ambiance for intimate, small-group gatherings. I don't feel intimidated or like I have to be a wine connoisseur to hang out here. Even during peak hours, the staff gives you time and attention." – Tiffany Cho, Garden Grove Fun fact: "Over the course of five years, we've had about 10 to 12 (marriage) proposals" at the bar, Castillo said. "They've all said, 'Yes.' "
